What are stockpile targets?
For most large logistics structures, stockpile targets are not recommended. Few stockpiles have meaningful permanent defaults, and their needs often change based on context. In these cases, broader network-level targets provide better flexibility.
Deprecation warning: Stockpile targets may be phased out in future updates in favour of more flexible network-specific targets. Your feedback on their usage is welcome!
Stockpile targets define the desired inventory levels for specific items at specific stockpiles. They are essential for guiding FoxStock’s recommendation system and keeping supplies balanced across your organisation. A target simply expresses how much of an item you want to maintain.
Targets are goals, not strict requirements. They tell FoxStock what you intend, and the recommendation system uses them to propose the most efficient transfers.
Apart from the recommendation system, members and officers can also use targets to monitor stockpile health at a glance. Stockpiles display color-coded status indicators showing whether they are above, at, or below their targets.
Why set targets?
Targets enable proactive, organised supply management. They help identify shortages before they become critical, direct surplus items toward places that need them, and allow your team to understand what each location is meant to hold. With targets in place, the recommendation system can prioritise critical stockpiles, determine appropriate source locations, and generate actionable transfer suggestions reducing manual planning and improving coordination.
How to set targets
Prerequisites
You need at least WRITE permission on the stockpile to create or modify targets.
If you don’t have permission, ask an officer with MANAGE permission to grant you access. See the Permissions guide.
Open the stockpile
- Log in to FoxStock and choose your organisation using the top-right dropdown.
- Navigate to Stockpiles using the left navigation menu.
- Select the stockpile you want to configure.
Open target settings
In the stockpile’s detail view, navigate to the “Targets” tab at the bottom right section. Here, you can define target levels for various items across the networks the stockpile belongs to.
Then, open the This stockpile section.
The other sections displayed in the targets tab are for network-specific targets. See our guide on network-specific targets for more information.
Create a new stockpile target
In the “This stockpile” section, click on “Add” to create a new stockpile target. A new row will appear with no item selected. Click on “Select an item” and select the item you want to set a target for
Then, on the right of the item icon is a field with a number. Enter the desired target level.
Since stockpile targets are not directly used by the recommendation system, flow direction does not apply here and is therefore not configurable.
Save the Target
Click Save, and that’s it!
The “Save” button only saves the changes made in that section. If you made changes elsewhere, click the main “Save all” button at the top of the Targets tab after setting up all your targets. If you forget to click “Save all,” or click on “Save” for individual sections only, your changes in other sections will not be saved!
