What are network targets?

Deprecation warning: Network targets may be phased out in future updates in favour of more flexible network-specific targets. Your feedback on their usage is welcome!

Network targets define desired aggregate inventory levels across multiple stockpiles within a network. They’re particularly powerful when used with intermediate networks to assess overall stock levels and health status.

A network target specifies how much of a particular item you want to maintain across all stockpiles within a network (and its child networks). For example:

  • “Frontline Hub Network should have 5000 total Basic Materials across all frontline stockpiles”
  • “Northern Operations Network should maintain 2000 Bandages in total”
  • “Distribution Hub should keep 0 Rifles (distribute immediately to child networks)”

Network targets work at the aggregate level. If you set a target of 5000 Basic Materials on a network with 5 stockpiles, the system will try to maintain 5000 total across all 5 stockpiles combined. This does not mean they are evenly spread out however.

Once defined, you will be able to see the aggregate stock levels on the network page, along with color-coded status indicators showing whether the network is above, at, or below its target.

Network targets do not work with the recommendation system! It is mostly a way to you to monitor aggregate inventory levels. Recommendations are generated at the stockpile-level, so only stockpile targets and network-specific targets are taken into account when generating recommendations.

How to set up network targets

Prerequisites

You need at least WRITE permission on the network to set or modify targets.

Go to the Networks  page from the left navigation bar. Select your organisation from the dropdown at the top-right corner if you belong to multiple organisations.

From the list of networks, select the network you want to set network targets for.

Open target settings

In the network’s detail view, navigate to the “Targets” tab at the bottom right section. Here, you can define target levels for various items across the stockpiles contained within the network.

Then, open the Entire network section.

This section may already be populated with existing network targets if any have been set before, but can also be populated with targets inherited from child stockpiles.

These inherited targets are aggregates and cannot be modified directly here. To change them, you must adjust the targets on the individual stockpiles themselves. You can overwrite inherited targets by creating new network targets for the same items directly on the network.

Create a new network target

In the “Entire network” section, click on “Add” to create a new network target. A new row will appear with no item selected. Click on “Select an item” and select the item you want to set a target for

Then, on the right of the item icon is a field with a number. Enter the desired target level.

Since network targets are not used by the recommendation system, flow direction does not apply here and is therefore not configurable.

Save the Target

Click Save, and that’s it!

The “Save” button only saves the changes made in that section. If you made changes elsewhere, click the main “Save all” button at the top of the Targets tab after setting up all your targets. If you forget to click “Save all,” or click on “Save” for individual sections only, your changes in other sections will not be saved!
